Springtime Spruce Up

I started the whole springtime clean slate thing three weeks ago. And today the sprucing up continues, starting with devotions out on the back porch.  Fortunately no one was around to catch the rather scary vision of me huddled in my ancient green terry robe, wrapped up like someone's grandma.  Loved this time with God, breathing the fresh air deep, watching the birds soar, basking in the newness of His creation.

I've opened every window in sight.  It's mostly sunny in the low 70s today and 20 mph gusts are swooping in from the northwest.  The wind chimes are going crazy and the curtains are billowing in the brisk breezes and winter's dust is flying right back outside where it belongs.  After a few hours, the place smells like I spent all day cleaning.  And despite all my good intentions, that's just not gonna happen.

I cleaned out my winter purse and loaded up my summer purse which is much smaller.  Brainstorm - I don't need to carry a checkbook because I only use that when I pay bills at my desk.  Outta there.  All those store loyalty cards?  No need to tote those babies around town if the store lets you give them your phone number instead.  Too many little odds and ends have accumulated in the winter bag's deep recesses.  In the trash it all goes.  Less stuff to haul around.

I'm washing up all the winter scarves, hats, and gloves.  And that ancient green terry robe.  I cut the ragged, holey, stained sleeves off my favorite sweatshirt to make it just a bit more presentable.  I'm lining up the good spring/summer clothes that no longer work for me so I can bring them to the resale shop.  I hear we only wear 20% of our stuff 80% of the time.  If it doesn't make me smile or fit decently or serve a purpose, I'm saying goodbye.  I'm pretty sure someone else will be more than happy to take a few treasures home with them.

I've dragged my huge ferns and the 4 year old geranium outside.  They've been pruned a bit, watered and fertilized to death, and are breathing great gulps of relief, so thankful to get out of the house.  I just know it.  I'll drag them back indoors if/when the weatherman says frost is coming.  The furniture on the back porch is up and running.  I can't wait to sit out there with a good magazine and a tall sparkling glass of iced tea.  I'm weary of mugs of the hot stuff.  You too?

I'm off to meet a friend at Panera's.  And that will be the icing on this truly delightful day.  I'm loving every bit of spring.  {And I know I'm not the only one!}

  1. Sounds lovely and refreshing. This weekend we tackled our outdoor storage closet and enjoyed getting rid of things. We also went through our closet and tossed clothes into a pile to donate...of course our dog Caleigh contributed by having her toy in the pile. We won't actually donate that...it already has a happy home!

    1. Jonathan - I LOVE going through the closet sorting through things. Or other people's closets sorting through things {your mom can attest to that!} Too fun!

  2. We've gone straight from winter to summer. Pulled out the warm weather clothes today, and I too chose to pack up some clothing to pass along. I love warm weather!
