If You Think You're Not, You're Kidding Yourself !!

May is National Older Americans Month.  I discovered this in Sunday's paper ... being sure to look through the lower half of my bifocals so I wouldn't miss a word of the bold typeface.

I was standing in line at the local A&P recently, and the woman in front of me turned around, looked me over, and said, "Did you know there's a $5 coupon in this week's flyer?  There's a stack of them over by the entrance!"  Never one to pass up a bargain and delighted at the prospect of saving $5, I bolted down the aisle to scarf up a paper.

And sure enough, there it was in black, red, and white - $5 OFF.  FOR SENIOR CITIZENS 55 YEARS OF AGE & OLDER.

Well, I'm not proud, although I have to admit that I did a double take ... and then this aging, AARP card-carrying 55 1/2 year old handed the rapidly torn piece of currency to the rather young man at the register.

The sad thing is, he didn't card me.

I don't know if he even glanced my way.  He swiped it and off came $5 from my order.

I didn't know whether to be insulted, or just plain happy that I saved a few bucks.

All that to say that we're all aging, and if you think you're not, you're kidding yourself.  Yet that doesn't mean that you're in for a life sentence in a rocker by the window, "just marking time," as my dear grandma used to say.  Some of my dearest friends are past 60 and they are the most vital people I know.  Enthusiastic about life and ministry, they run circles around me.  With their zest for living and positive perspective, they are teaching me that in many ways life has just begun.

I like what Daniel Amen, M.D. wrote recently in his post EXERCISE FOR LONG LIFE!

Those with pep in their step stay younger.

Do your aerobics and keep more brain tissue!

Balance exercises help you age gracefully.

The greater your muscle strength, the less risk of Alzheimers.

Those who exercise slow down their biological clock.

Click on the post title to read the details.  None of this is hot-off-the-press news.  But it does bear repeating.  We don't have to be victims to the passing of time.  And we can care for our bodies well.

It won't be easy.

But it would be smart ... and I'm thinking that it honors God, since our bodies are the temple where He resides {1 Corinthians 6:19}.

Aging gracefully ... hopefully ~
Linda

***  And keep this verse in mind - "Is not wisdom found among the aged?  Does not long life bring understanding? {Job 12:12}.
