Fireside Breakfast

"When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.

Jesus said to them, 'Bring some of the fish you have just caught.'

Simon Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore.  It was full of large fish,
153, but even with so many the net was not torn.

Jesus said to them, 'Come and have breakfast.'  None of the disciples dared ask Him,
'Who are you?'  They knew it was the Lord.

Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish."
- John 21:9-13 -

  1. Hi Linda! What a perfect image for this Scripture passage. I have always wondered if I would have grabbed a baggie and scooped up the fish bones just as a reminder that Jesus was truly there! What a wonderful breakfast that must have been. Miraculous, really.
    Blessed weekend my friend,
    Ceil

    1. Yes, we do want a remembrance, something to hold on to, a keepsake to treasure. You've got me thinking as I sit here ... no wonder He's given us the gift of the bread, the cup, to remember His death and resurrection.

Thanks for taking me there, Ceil ...

    1. I hear what you're saying, Carol. I have gone back to that final chapter in John over and over this past week. Never before have I noticed all the details, the nuances, the depth of conversation. Makes me wonder why we so often stop at 'He is Risen' and not savor Jesus' final days on earth.

      I'm glad you're here, Carol.

    2. So at lunch we talked about the signifigance of that breakfast on the beach. for me, the focus has always been that they didn't catch fish, and so Jesus helped him and they the ran to him, etc.

Now I see the serventhood of Jesus in preparing that breakfast. They were hungry and he cared - he is good and he delights in us. (as I said in my post - it's been my journey to believe he is good again AND delights in me in addition to caring about me in the over all grander scheme of eternity. He cares for the here and now.) After all that had happened all he did was offer his presence and grace on that morning after everyone had left him and Peter even denied him three times. I love this beach scene more and more.

oh, and we are working through "eastertide " in church...it's just that i missed that too last year and we are new to this church that observes the church calendar, which I appreciate and value.

    3. How I treasure that presence and grace of His, Carol. Thanks for going deep with us here ... I would so love to sit and talk with you person to person about the riches of the faith that unite our hearts over the miles.

Blessings for bringing so much depth to the conversation here this weekend, my friend! I so appreciate you.

    1. I wonder if those mealtimes spent with Jesus were the highlight of His followers' lives. Just like many of our most treasured moments are spent in breaking bread at the table with those we love ...

Thanks for coming by this afternoon, Kalley! You're presence here is like a ray of sunshine on this very cloudy afternoon.

  6. I was just telling my husband I am ready to be a vegetarian and don't want to consume much of animal protein anymore, but reading this made me rethink my attitude... I am thankful I had food to eat today :)

    1. I love the final 2 chapters in John! I'm so thankful that Christ's life didn't end with an open tomb, but that we're privy to these intimate conversations with his dearest followers. Just simply powerful!
