On Huddling With a Stack of Books

It's one of those weird and wild winter days where it starts out all warm and rainy, melting snow fading fast into the soggy soil waiting below.  The sun tries in vain to push her way through the heaviness of deepening gray cloud cover.  I drag my two huge ol' thirsty ferns outside for a long deep drink.  After a bit those temps begin to plummet slowly slowly slowly.

The ferns get dragged back into the house, refreshed.

This is a huddle-under-a-quilt day.  With Bible and journal and a few library books that need to be finished off.  And then there's a copy of Sacred Ordinary from a dear friend ... a lovely, gentle devotional to be sure.  And Jim Henderson's The Resignation of Eve, must reading for all women who wonder what to do with their giftedness in houses of God where glass ceilings keep them from pursuing His call on their lives.

I pour a hot cup of fragrant tea into what is now my most favorite mug.  And I settle in.  Could be a long cold snap.  I purpose to stay cozy.  Productive.  And open to what God is trying to speak deep.  He alone knows what I need to experience today.

What books are keeping you company on these weird and wild winter days?

  1. Oh, that's one of my favorite activities: snuggling under a warm blanket with a hot cup of herbal tea and a good book! Perfect activity for this deep freeze weather! I just finished reading "The Book Thief." It has to go on the list as one of my favorites. Today I'm setting the books aside to finish crocheting a baby blanket. If I don't get it done, that sweet little grand niece will be walking before she gets her baby blanket. :-) Stay warm, Linda, and have a blessed day. And happy reading!

    1. A thought-provoking journey, for sure, Lisa. Thanks for this recommendation. And for you dear readers? Be prepared to re-evaluate, to ponder, to reconsider, to reaffirm ... and then release your giftedness and calling right back to the One who implanted your passion for ministry deep in your heart to begin with!

And then roll up your sleeves and get to work. 'The fields are white unto harvest,' aren't they ...

  3. Linda, it sure is a good time of year for books, blankets, hot cocoa and snuggling by the fire. I try to read through the bible once a year and I'm just a little bit behind because of a bible class. I'm trying to play catch up and as a result my other reading has taken a back seat. I'm a big C.S. Lewis fan and I have several of his books started. I can't wait to get back to them. Stay Warm!

  6. Love those days that provide an excuse to hunker down and steep in the words others write. Any day to read under a pile of blankets is a gift. I just read Alphabet of Grace by Buechner and loved every minute of it. Lovely to visit through Lyli's link up community.

  7. I'm slowly working on the book Anything by Jennie Allen. I'm struggling these days with starting and finishing a book. I need to "hunker down" as Shelly says. :)
    Visiting from Lyli's today.

  8. Have you read anything by Carol Kent? She is one of my favorites. I got lost in her book Laying Down my Isaac.

Thanks for linking up with Thought-Provoking Thursday!

    1. I remember a good friend talking about the impact of Carol's life, her writings, her words born out of great grief. Check out her story, dear reader

  10. Dear Linda
Yes, my friend, He alone knows everything about our lives. He knows us even better than we know ourselves and only He can heal and fill our broken hearts! I hope you had a wonderful day.
