The Energies of Prayer

'You're familiar with the old written law, 'Love your friend,' and its unwritten companion, 'Hate your enemy.'

I'm challenging that.  I'm telling you to love your enemies.  Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst.  When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer, for then you are working out of your true selves, your God-created selves.

This is what God does.  He gives His best - the sun to warm and the rain to nourish - to everyone, regardless: the good and bad, the nice and nasty.

If all you do is love the lovable, do you expect a bonus?  Anybody can do that.  If you simply say hello to those who greet you, do you expect a medal?  Any run-of-the-mill sinner does that.

In a word, what I'm saying is, Grow up.  You're kingdom subjects.  Now live like it.  Live out your God-created identity.  Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you.'
- Matthew 5:43-48  {The Message}

  1. Linda, I love these verses in the Message. The phrase "live generously toward others the way God lives toward you" gets me every time. Thanks so much.

  2. Jason - yep, The Message hits it out of the park every time ...

  3. If we filtered every thought, every response through God's undeserved love for ourselves this would be easier to do, don't you think? Instead we get so tangled up in our our thoughts and emotions and forget how great our own sin is to a perfect and righteous God.
    "Live generously" that!

  4. 'Living genereously' is such a compelling invitation, Marty, isn't it ... thanks for dropping by!

  5. I'm hearing you, Linda and I'm taking your challenge to heart! I do need to grow up. It's so painful but through that pain, God is refining my character. I'm praying God would help me to meet this challenge today and everyday. Thanks for this incredible encouragement!

  6. Oh, Beth, His Word continues to cut right to the heart of the matter, doesn't it. Believe me, I'm challenged right along with you!

  7. I try. I probably don't do good enough, often enough, "Godly" enough... but I try.

    Thanks for the reminding.

  8. This challenge, this command of Jesus is a hard one, isn't it ... thankfully, He is faithful to empower us to do what He asks. We'd be sunk if we were left on our own ...

Truly appreciate you dropping by this evening, CaryJo!

Welcome to the table, friend!

This is where we gather and hang out. I'd love for you to pull up a chair and jump right into the conversation. Or simply say 'hello.'

l'll be dropping in to visit you sometime soon ...
